Moving From the 'Prey' of Life

Breaking the Cycle: Moving From the 'Prey' of Life to its Author

We have all had moments where the world feels overwhelmingly heavy. It is a sentiment captured beautifully and devastatingly in a few short lines:

"Life is very cruel / I am the prey of life / Maybe I can make changes / But I am too afraid of / LIFE.”

These words touch on a profound, universal human experience: the feeling of being hunted by circumstances, paralyzed by the fear of the unknown, and trapped between the desire for a better tomorrow and the terror of trying to build it.

The Weight of Being the "Prey"

When life hits hard—whether through loss, failure, anxiety, or stagnant routines—it is easy to feel small. Viewing yourself as the "prey" is a natural response to prolonged stress. It feels as though life isn’t something you are living, but rather something that is happening to you, a force waiting around the corner to disrupt your peace the moment you let your guard down.

When you are in this survival mode, your world shrinks. Your primary goal becomes hiding, protecting yourself, and just making it to the next day.

The Paradox of Fear and Change

The deepest truth in those lines lies in the hesitation: "Maybe I can make changes / But I am too afraid." This is the great paradox of human growth. We desperately want things to be different, yet the current version of misery can feel safer than the unknown path of change. Familiar pain is predictable; healing and change are wild, uncertain, and terrifying. To change your life, you have to step out of the hiding spot and face the very environment that hurt you. It requires confronting the monster.

Shifting the Narrative

If you find yourself identifying with these words, know that acknowledging your fear is not a weakness—it is actually the first step toward that "maybe."

  • Start incredibly small: You don't have to change your entire life by tomorrow morning. Change can be a single different choice, a single boundary set, or five minutes of doing something that makes you feel like you again.

  • Acknowledge the fear, but move anyway: Courage is not the absence of fear; it is the realization that something else is more important than fear. You can be terrified of life and still take one tiny step forward.

  • Reclaim your agency: The hunter only wins if the prey keeps running or freezes forever. By making even the smallest change, you step out of the role of the victim and back into the role of the creator.

Life can indeed be cruel, and it is entirely valid to feel afraid of its unpredictable nature. But remember: the fact that you can still conceive of the word "changes" means the spark hasn't gone out. You are still here, you are still fighting, and you have the power to rewrite the ending of your poem.

"Life is very cruel

I am the prey of life

Maybe I can make changes

But I am too afraid of

LIFE.”
